Pseudosasa Japonica

Pseudosasa Japonica

(Sieb. & Zucc. ex Steud.) Makino ex Nakai

The reasonable height (3 to 4 meters)
and compactness of this bamboo
mean that it is adapted to small
gardens. The thin stalks were
traditionally used for arrow-making.
Phyllostachys aurea

Synonyme : Phyllostachys viridis ‘Sulfurea’
Has superb yellow stalks painted with one or several stripes at each dividing node.
Phyllostachys reticulata Phyllostachys reticulata Castillonii Phyllostachys reticulata Castillonii-inversa

Phyllostachys reticulata

(Ruprecht) K. Koch
Synonymes : Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. & Zucc., Phyllostachys mazelii Rivière & C. Rivière.
This is one of the commonest bamboo plants in the park. The optimal soil and climate conditions here mean that it has reached a maximum height (20 meters). The robustness and flexibility of its culms make it ideal for use in building(scaffolding) and, having been cut up into strips, the culms are also used to make household objects. Two horticulturalforms can be seen along the circuit : ’CASTILLONII’, with golden yellow stalks and green stripes, and the opposite,’CASTILLONI-INVERSA’.
Phyllostachys viridiglaucescens (Carrière)

Phyllostachys viridiglaucescens (Carrière)

Rivière & C. Rivière
This species is greatly valued in China because of the pleasant taste of its shoots as well as for its culms which are used to make shafts for tools and shoulder pieces. This, along with P. aurea, introduced a long time ago,is the most common bamboo species found in France.12-19-Arbres&Bambous Rem 23/03/08 10:09 Page 3
Phyllostachys nigra Boryana Phyllostachys nigra henonis

Phyllostachys nigra

(Lodd. ex Lindley) Munro
Its green stalks which turn ebony black after one or two years have made this elegant bamboo plant very popular. It was probably the first temperate bamboo introduced into Europe (1823).
The cultivated variety ’BORYANA’ results in a very different plant whose stalks are three times as big and tall, and the colour blue-green with brown patches like a panther skin. Phyllostachys nigra (Lodd. exLindley) Munro var. HENONIS (Mitford)Stapf ex Rendle is just as impressive a wild variation.
