Questions about bamboo
Can a bamboo clump be controlled ?
Yes, we have designed a rhizome control barrier. This is 70 cm wide plastic film which should be installed at approximately a 15° angle with teh vertical. The incline prevents rhizomes from spreading underground and forces them to emerge before eventually growing up into the open air. They can be cut if they attempt to grow over the barrier.
Can bamboo plants grow in water ?
No, they are not aquatic plants, they can grow above river banks. They are however excellent plants for maintaining and stabilising embankments.
Can we get rid of bamboo ?
Yes, the culms must be cut at ground level, then all young shoots that emerge must be eliminated (they can be eaten). After this has been repeated several times, the reserves will be exhausted usually over the course of one season and the rhizomes will quickly wither.
Are bamboo plants frost resistant ?
90% of the bamboo varieties we have on offer are hardy and can withstand negative temperatures (-20° on average). Bamboo leaves are persistent, which means that you can have a compact hedge all year round.
Is it true that a bamboo can grow up to a metre a day ?
If a bamboo is provided with the right conditions (the variety, climate and season), a bamboo can grow more than one meter a day.
How high are the tallest bamboo plants ?
Here at the Bambouseraie, the highest bamboos are almost 23 metres tall ; however some tropical varieties can grow over 40 meters in their own native habitat.
