Benoît CHOTEAU
In 1978 Benoît Choteau acquired a huge rape (colza) field. With a great deal of work and enormous passion he transformed it into a plant nursery in which massive multicoloured clumps of trees and shrubs now grow, planted through the years.
Having trained as a landscape architect, and having acquired wide experience, in 1988 he was able to set out an approximately 50-are (1 are = 100 m x 100 m) arboretum in which various collections grow harmoniously side by side : Acer, Prunus, Euonymus, Quercus, Fagus, Magnolia, Malus Tilia, Aesculus, Liquidambar and son on.
In 1995, as there were too many plants, Benoît Choteau, as an established dendrologist, created a "wood park" to increase the numbers of the trees. In the park, plants are classed by genus, which makes it easier to verify the identity of the variety and to observe how plants adapt to our soils and climates. At present the "wook park" is composed of approximately 900 taxons and the collection has over 3,000 different plants.
In parallel with setting out plant nurseries, Benoît Choteau enjoys contact with plant lovers in exhibitions organised in Belgium and in France. He has won several prizes in Celles (near Tournai) and Courson (South of Paris) for the quality and presentation of his rare plants.
One particular tree variety has always held a special place in his plant nursery : it is not only a tree, it's a real passion, which Benoît Choteau has brought to share with us in this exhibition on JAPANESE MAPLE TREES
